The "Statue of Freedom" sits atop the dome of the US Capitol. Though it was designed by Thomas Crawford in 1855, Crawford died in 1857 before he could create the statue. Starting in 1860, the statue was cast in five pieces from Crawford's model by Clark Mills and was installed in 1863.
